Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are tiny particles surrounded by membranes that cells produce and use to communicate with one another. These particles contain distinct surface markers, proteins, and nucleic acids that reveal information about the cells that secreted them. Flow cytometry is a useful tool for studying EVs because it can measure individual particles’ size, concentration, and surface markers, even in a mixed sample. Flow cytometry is utilized in evaluating EVs, using standardized configurations to ensure consistent outcomes. By identifying EV subpopulations that are associated with disease, flow cytometry can assist in detecting, diagnosing, and tracking disease progression.
